The NorCal Finest 100

The NorCal Finest event took place last Saturday at El Cerrito High with trainers Jeremy Russotti and Alan Stein demonstrating their respective basketball and strength/conditioning drills and dispensing advice.

What we decided to do this time around was interview a trio of player participants in order to get their takeaway from the gathering since that was the primary purpose.

David Ahern, a 6-foot backcourter from Marin Catholic has previously experience training with Russotti. His description: "We began with a warmup from Coach Stein, then did 90 minutes of basketball skill work followed by 60 minutes of core and strength training."

After lunch, it was matchups involving the participants.

What did Ahern like best? "Because of my training with Jeremy, the skills training was a review for me.  I liked the tips Alan Stein offered about strength training and recovery and diet. Having the chance to go to him and ask questions was nice."

He added, "the talent level was higher than usual at these kind of events." Ahern also credited Russotti for making a good effort to 'get the guys to play the right way" in the afternoon portion.

Grant Vermeer is a 6-foot-1 guard at Bellarmine Prep, a member of the West Catholic Athletic League (ECAL).  Having no previous exposure to the offerings of Russotti and Stein, all was a new experience for him. "Everyone was focused and paying attention,: he said, "and every single drill by the coaches were things I hadn't seen before. Both Alan and Jeremy were great, like the way to do pushups (Stein) and always work on dribbling with one ball, not two (Russotti). I'm incorporating what we were taught into my training.

Vermeer added (about the p.m. portion), "It was fun to play with the great players and watch them succeed."

He concluded with "I want to thank the sponsors of the event. It allowed me to work with two of the best trainers in the world."

St. Ignatius' Stephen Domingo has also trained with Russotti. His succinct take: "Going through the drills with NBA level staff helps build a solid foundation. I learned balance techniques and how to do weight training without the need for a weight room."

Stein, new to the Bay Area athletes, reflected on his participation and offered: "The NorCal’s Finest Top 100 Clinic was an amazing event! It gave the area’s top prospects a firsthand look at the type of training they need to do to take their games to the next level. Both the skill workout and the strength and  conditioning workout were intense, focused, and purposeful.  The players definitely left their comfort zones!”

He added, “Kids today play too many games as is. What made the NorCal’s Finest Top 100 Clinic special was the emphasis on proper training both from the skill standpoint and the strength & conditioning standpoint.  Players learned how to workout, a concept that most high school players don’t get exposed to.”

Stein offers a weekly blog, plus a YouTube channel and a Twitter account for those wanting further inspiration and information.

Let's finish with Russotti's observations: "I am very happy with the turnout for our first event. We had a ton of talent and potential in the gym. The gym definitely had a buzz during the workout and skill sessions and the kids were engaged. Alan Stein brought it and really brought his creative wisdom and credibility to the Bay Area. "

Russotti went on to say "We don't want this event to be labeled a showcase event since that is not the true focus. These kids do not need anymore exposure. We want to expose the players on how professional athletes train, their mindsets, and how you have to take advantage of the opportunities they have in front of them."

"I think every year we will reflect and find ways to improve the event. I think we will add more skill training to the event, while making changes to the games format. The games definitely can become more competitive.  The top kids need to learn how to always compete and give their fullest effort on both sides of the floor. I firmly believe that if we can get our top players to learn this mindset, we will be producing bona fide NBA caliber players year in and year out. I truly believe that!"

Jeremy Russotti/Sacramento Valley's Finest

Here is Jeremy Russotti once again with another of his training events. Get to one of these especially if you are a guard or wing, Jeremy's specialty training areas.

Sacramento Valley's Finest Player Evaluations
December 7, 2010

October 2 and 3 marked the 3rd Annual Sac Valley Finest Showcase Event. Once again it was a huge success with approximately 125 players in attendance from the Central Valley.

The drills sessions were impressive and each guy worked very hard, was attentive, and reaped the knowledge the training staff had to offer. Evaluation games followed the drills sessions and below is a write-up of the top players from the event.

Sac Valley Finest Notable Players

# Demetri Dartis - 2011 - 6'4 Guard - McClatchy HS

Has a great body for a wing player at the next level. Big, strong and very quick first step to go along with his improved skill level. His shot has gotten tremendously better from last year, but still needs to work on his mechanics. If he can continue to develop and put in the time in the gym he can play at the next level in college.

# Thomas Fitzgerald - 2014 - 6'7 Forward - Pleasant Grove HS

A young freshman, Thomas had a good start to the camp before he got hurt. He has size and length and obviously is still maturing. His skill set is pretty solid; he has great potential and showed very well in the skill training sessions. He was coordinated and athletic and needs to keep working so he can play both inside and outside. Thomas has a bright future if he continues to work.

# Austin Johnson - 2011 - 6'6 Forward - Amador HS

Austin is very long and uses his length to his advantage. His footwork has improved a ton from the previous year, and he now is finishing around the rim better too. He still needs to work on his outside shot but if he can improve that throughout the year he has the ability to be a really good player for Amador this year.

# Jimmy Keating - 2012 - 5'11 PG - Foothill HS

Jimmy is a very tough-nosed get after it type of player. He used his quickness to either get by players or his savvy to get them up in the air and draw a foul. He shot it very well from three during the weekend, and also was a solid distributor when getting into the lane. Look for him to have a big year at Foothill.

# Jerrell Green - 2011 - 6'6 Forward - Bear Creek HS

Jerrell is a big body post player who has some good bounce in his legs. He is a strong kid who has gotten better at finishing around the rim this year. He still needs to work on his passing out of the post, but that will come with more experience and playing time. For him to continue to get better he needs to keep playing against better competition at the post spots.

# Mitesh Patel - 2012 - 5'9 Combo - Christian Brothers HS

Mitesh was very good throughout the weekend.  He had a very high IQ for the game and shot the basketball really well.  He played both the 1 and the 2 and really shot the ball well from 3. Mitesh had a great feel for the game and had a great passion for the game. He did not look imposing but simply made play after play and his play stood out.

# Ota Okung Dowa - 2011 - 6'3 Wing - Monterey Trail HS

Ota might have been the best athlete at the camp. He has a college body and played extremely hard. He was a great finisher and when aggressive was nearly impossible to stop. He possesses great lateral bounce and was extremely aggressive to the basket.  If he continues to work on his outside shot he will be a good player at the next level.  Big time rebounder from his wing position and can really defend.  His on ball perimeter defense caused a lot of players problems when he guarded them.

# Andre Beard Jr. - 2012 - 6'4 Wing - Weston Ranch HS

Andre continues to show improvement in his game. He has a big strong body and when he is aggressive is very hard to guard.  Andre attacks the basket very well and finishes pretty well. Andre needs to continue to work on his mid range game so he will be harder to guard. When Andre wants to, he really rebounds well for his position. Andre has to play with a lot of energy on both ends and under control and he will be really hard to contain. He possesses great size and strength and had a great weekend.

# Andre Jones 2011 - 6'3 Wing - Rocklin HS

Andre has a personality to go with his game. He plays with relentless energy and simply makes plays on both ends of the floor. His all around game continues to get better and better. Andre finishes at the rim and is very hard to guard. He has a solid handle and when he shoots it consistently he will be extremely hard to guard. Andre is long and has great size for his position. He's very coachable and picks up things extremely quickly.  Andre was simply outstanding over the 2 days and one of the better players at the camp. He is going to have a  huge year this upcoming season and should be one of the better players in the Sacramento area.

# Kyle Peterson 2011 - 6'1 Combo - Rocklin HS

Kyle had a great showing over the weekend and simply made play after play. He simply possesses the best skill in basketball which is the ability to shoot the basketball. Kyle knocked down 3's and has a great mid range game. He handled the ball and made plays. Kyle and Andre will be compliments to each other this year at Rocklin and should be one of the better guard tandems in the Sacramento area. Kyle also is relentless in trying to make plays whether it be for himself or his teammates and he's always in attack mode.

# Xaiver Manske 2012 6-3 Wing/SF McNair High School

Xavier is an undersized small forward who has a great knack for the ball. He's very intense in and around the basket and finishes well. He was possibly the hardest working kid in the gym this weekend. Xavier has decent ball handling skills but needs to work hard on his right hand before going on to the next level. He also can spend some time working on his midrange game, as he lacks a solid jump shot. If he can continue to work on those areas, he will help a team at the next level.

# Blake Williams 2012 6-2 PG Kennedy HS

Blake had a strong showing at this year's event. He is strong and physical, but with a smooth game as well. He is also one of the more athletic guards you will find in SAC. He can defend, play his position well, but like most guards, needs to improve his outside shot. He should be one of the stronger junior point guards in the SAC area this year.

# Quinn Ryan 2015 6-4 SF (8th Grader)

We usually don't let 8th graders into our events but Quinn's future high school coach begged us and said Quinn wouldn't disappoint. And after his showing, he definitely showed enough to warrant future recognition. Quinn is 6-4, has guard skills, and only in the 8th grade. He shows a lot of potential but of course it is very difficult to gauge the potential of an 8th grader. With that said, he has the biggest advantage of any other player from the event, in that he was exposed to the high competition level and understands that his skill level will determine his future success.

# Kyron Gumbs-Cooper 2012 6-0 2G Valley HS

Like all Valley High school players, Kyron is super tough and competitive. Kyron loves the game and seemed to always have a smile on his face. He is super bouncy, loves to defend, and can get to the basket. The other Valley guys fit this mold as well, but Kyron stood out just a little more to deserve recognition.

Jeremy Russotti's Central Cali's Finest event results

Here's a writeup from October by Jeremy Russotti about the top participants in his Central Cali's Finest event. Go here to learn more about Jeremy, one of the wisest and best basketball trainers in the country:

October 16th-17th marked the 4th Annual Central Cali's Finest Instructional Showcase Event.

Central Cali's Finest Notable Players

# Justin Leathers (2011) Foothill
Justin was a beast at this year's CCF event. He was constantly around the ball and his team just seemed to win in every drill. Around 6-foot-6, Justin has the height to go inside but also has decent skills on the outside. With continued work on his wing game, he could become a really tough small forward at the next level.

# T.J. Viney (2013) Edison
T.J. is a really quick point guard that can get to the rim. He reminds me of a young Kiwi Gardner. Just like Kiwi, T.J. let everyone know at our event that you have to be on your top D-Game to stay in front of him. However, his game will really elevate when he learns to dominate a game with his floor leadership and passing, rather than scoring. T.J. is one of the top players in the 2013 class and should be a potential D1 player in the upcoming years.

# Michael Best (2011) Terra Linda
Michael had a very strong showing at this year's event. He has improved light years from last year. His confidence, competitiveness, and skill level separated him as the top big man at the event. His skill set around the basket is very high and he can definitely step out and hit the deep shot. A bona fide D1 prospect, with added weight and strength he will be a major contributor to a college program.

# Colin Slater (2016) Middle School
We never really have middle school players in our event, but Colin is a rare exception. Colin is years ahead of his peers in relation to skill. Even though he came off an ACL surgery, Colin looked pretty good. His handle and skill set are very good. However, he is going to have to find that next gear once he reaches high school since the others will catch up at some point. With that said, if Colin improves at the same rate as his peers, he could be a top recruit in years to come.

# Britton Williams (2012) - Liberty
Like T.J., Britton is another cat-like quick guard that loves to compete. Britton is a fierce competitor and you can just see on his face that he loves this game. He has a nice skill set and seems to understand the point guard position. He is a solid high school player and should have a shot at playing at the next level.

# Antwoun Whitfield (2011) - Clovis East
Antwoun has what I call "cool-game". He is very effective, however, and looks like he is moving in slow motion. He was one of the top shooters at the event, and also showed more ability to put the ball on the floor then he did last year. He should thrive in the East system and put up a lot of threes. However, he should continue to work on his pull up shot and ability to finish at the rim in order to play at the next level.

# Ronald Williams (2012) Bullard
This very athletic combo guard really shined at the event. He is a big time slasher and finished around the basket very well. He is a great defender and really gets after it when guarding the ball. He simply does not let guys get by him. He will be a huge cog in Bullard's attack this year and will cause headaches for a lot of the guards in the top league in the Valley.

# Korey Anderson (2011) Clovis High
- Korey may have improved the most over his 3 years in High School in regards to body conditioning, skill level, and aggressiveness. Korey simply was ferocious in all the drills and has really leaned out and gotten so much stronger. It is very obvious that Korey has really worked on his strength, agility, and athleticism. He's a 6-foot-7 left handed power forward that finishes with authority, has great touch, and can shoot the basketball out to 18 feet. He simply dominated the skill development portion with the big men, although playing through an injury to his lungs. Korey is smooth and crafty and really knows how to use his body. Korey will thrive at the next level.

# Matt Johnson (2011) Palma
Matt had a really good event shooting the ball. His confidence was on point as he knocked down shot after shot. A pure 3-point spot shooter, but also understands the game as well. Should be a key part of Palma's talented squad coming back in 2010-2011.

# Vinny Lidgett (2011) Stockdale
- You've got to love a player like Vinny. You can tell Vinny is a gym rat that loves to play the game. He was also one of the top shooters at the event with a beautiful shot. Though undersized, Vinny makes it up with his passion for the game and willingness to compete.

# Ryan Swain (2012) Buchanan
The son of a coach so you know he can shoot the basketball. But he also has such a good feel for the game. Very intelligent and skilled and knows how to play. A 6-foot-4 swing forward, Ryan loves facing the rim and shooting the basketball. With pick and pops he was deadly as his defenders simply could not come out to challenge fast enough.

# Dom Katter (2011) Buchanan
The "masked man", Dom was one of the most effective guards at the camp. Dom always had a smile on his face, seemed to win every drill, and his team seamed to always come out on top. He's a smooth lefty that can get to the rim, shoot the 3, but also can defend the perimeter. Should be one of the top guards in the Fresno area.

# Brett Parishan (2011) Reedley
I fell in love with this guard. Brett is hard nosed, tough, and if you don't watch out, will smash on you very easily. He can get to the rim, is a consistent shooter, and definitely has D2 potential. Needs to work on his muscle size and strength, but with his size and athletic ability, he should have a monster year for Reedley.

# Ashton Richardson (2011) Turlock
By far the most functional athlete we had at the event. Ashton constantly was slicing through the lane, using his angles, and finishing with abandon. Ashton was also able to hit the open pull up shot and showed a willingness to defend. If Ashton improves on his long range shot, should be a nice college prospect.

# Kellan Howard (2013) Central
Kellan is a young, up and coming big man in Fresno. He runs the floor very well and plays with passion. Though he is still very thin and needs to improve his skills, he definitely has the frame to play at the next level. I expect within a few years, Kellan will be the cream of the crop at our CCF events.

# Rashad Jackson (2014) Garces
Rashad was one of the only middle school kids to ever attend our event last year. This year as a freshman, he didn't disappoint. Rashad plays above his years and has a body of an upperclassman. However, Rashad needs to improve his Basketball IQ and shot selection. When he learns that, he will be one of the top Central Cali players for the next 3 years. A bona fide D1 prospect if he continues to work.

# Tyler Harris - (2012) Bakersfield Christian
Looks can be deceiving, but Tyler was one of the most feared offensive threats at the event. He can put up points quickly and proved that all weekend. Though he needs to improve on his consistency and not fall in love with the 3-pointer, I expect Tyler will have some huge games this year in Bakersfield. Next year, while maturing his game even more, he should be one of the top players in our event.

# Corey Silverstrom (2013) Bullard
With the tutelage of Coach Amundson, I predict Corey will be one of the toughest guards in Fresno in the next few years. A strong, tall guard who looks slow, Corey was deceptively quick, and had a very good change of direction crossover. He has a knack for the ball and consistently scored during all of his games. Big things to come for Corey.

# Aaron Cochran (2013) Buhach Colony
POTENTIAL is written all over Aaron Cochran. Aaron could be a future 1st round pick in the NFL or could be a D1 basketball player as well. New to the game, Aaron is a beast in the middle and showed great hands and feet for a 6-foot-9 sophomore player. It is scary to imagine how good he will become in the next few years. His future is looking really bright.

# Eriq Belt (2011) Buhach Colony
At first I questioned Eriq's shot selection and demeanor on the court but the more I watched him, the more I liked his game. Eriq can be a true point guard when directed and can make his team better. He is hard to guard, knocks down shots, and showed that he can make the highlight pass as well. If he continues to set up his teammates to control the game, he will be the link Buhach needs to take league this year.

# Will Nelson (2012) Mt. Whitney
Will is a great slasher and finisher at the rim. He was also relentless in his attack of the basket. Will is a great looking forward who can guard all positions and can play all positions. He is extremely versatile and will be a tough guard this year as he exposes guards and big men guarding him.

# John Brinson Clovis East
- John is another guard molded in Clovis East's system of attacking. John was very aggressive and attacked the rim at will. John can really get in creases to shoot and drive and has a way of creating space to get his shot off. John can really play off Kevin Bailey and Antwoun Winfield and will be a huge factor in Clovis East's run at the league title.

# Other Notables

Jordan Belton (2012) San Benito
Courtland Duckworth (2012) Porterville
Alec Carlson (2012) Turlock
Mike Hill (2011) Bullard
Grant Getz (2013) Bullard

Jeremy Russotti's North Bay's Finest event

Jeremy Russotti and his crew have the North Bay's Finest event coming up this weekend -- October 9 and 10. It's worth attending -- even as a spectator -- just to view the skills training portions of the weekend.
Coming October 9th-10th, 1% CLUB Basketball will be organizing the 5th Annual "North Bay's Finest" Instructional showcase for the top 125 players of Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Solano, Humboldt-Del Norte, Lake, and Mendocino counties, respetively. The showcase event will once again involve elite level skill training in the early sessions, followed by evaluated team games in front of lower level college coaches and recruiting analysts in the latter sessions. The cost is $85 if pre-registered before Oct. 8th. Walk up registration cost is $95. This year's event will be held once again at Sonoma State University from 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

The idea for the "The Finest" Showcase events came about by Jeremy Russotti with the vision for a more positive, beneficial, and true grassroots basketball events in areas that were overlooked. Back in 2001-2002, two of Coach Russotti's former players received b-ball scholarships to the PAC-10 Conference. Ironically, both of them were never invited to any local or national so-called "exposure events," overlooked mostly because of the area they resided in. At that point, Russotti knew a quality showcase event could really help draw needed attention to any area, resulting in more recruting resources for top local talent. More importantly, he realized the importance of INSTRUCTIONAL SKILL TRAINING vs EXPOSURE and the impact it had on his player's future recruitments. Therefore, the main focus of the event will be on skill building (6 total hours), with the added bonus of 4-5 games of evaluated team games.

Not only will the event be endorsed by scouting services, but also will include a report written by 1% CLUB Basketball that is emailed to over 1,700 coaches at the D2, NAIA, National JUCO and California JUCO programs (free of charge). Says camp director Jeremy Russotti, "We really take pride in spreading our message about individual skill building and how it can really drive your future recruitment process. The success of Josh Akognon has really come full circle, backing our message that was started five years ago. Also, there is a lot of talent in the North Bay that various colleges or junior colleges never get the chance to see or read about. Furthermore, we want to help bridge these connections, while trying to build intrinsic motivation within our attendee's to the importance of skill building in their daily routines.....and not just playing games."

Jeremy Russotti's SAC Town event

This coming weekend (October 2 and 3), Jeremy Russotti is holding his Sacramento Valley's Finest training event. The most appropriate message to offer is if you aren't going to be there, then you aren't serious about improving your skills set.

From Jeremy's site:
The idea for the "The Finest" Showcase events came about by Jeremy Russotti with the vision for a more positive, beneficial, and true grassroots basketball events in areas that were overlooked. Back in 2001-2002, two of coach Russotti's former players received basketball scholarships to the PAC-10 Conference. Ironically, both of them were never invited to any local or national so-called "exposure events"; overlooked mostly because of the area they resided in. Therefore, the main focus of the event will be on skill building (6 total hours), with the added bonus of 4-5 games of evaluated exposure games.

Not only will the event be endorsed by various scouting services, but also will include a report written by 1% CLUB Basketball that is emailed to over 1,700 coaches at the D2, NAIA, National JUCO and California JUCO programs (free of charge). Says camp director Jeremy Russotti, "We really take pride in spreading our message about individual skill building and how it can really drive your future recruitment process. The success of Josh Akognon, has really come full circle, backing our message that was started five years ago. Also, there is a lot of talent in the Sacramento Valley region that various colleges or junior colleges never get the chance to see or read about. Furthermore, we want to help bridge these connections, while trying to build intrinsic motivation within our attendee's to the importance of skill building in their daily routines.....and not just playing games."

The two-day event, which will be held at Consumes River Junior College, will run from 11-5:30 pm.
