A Weber State preview

Jon Reed assess Weber State in one of his recent posts, with former Hayward High backcourter Davion Berry and Jordan Richardson, ex- of West High in Tracy, earning starting lineup spots:
WEBER STATE
G - Jordan Richardson
G - Scott Bamforth
F - Davion Berry
F - Byron Fulton
F - Kyle Tresnak
FG - Gelaun Wheelwright
FB - Joel Bolomboy

Comments
: I think by the end of the year there is a good chance that Gelaun Wheelwright will be starting at the point, but I think the more experienced Richardson will get the nod right away. There is still enough talent on this team to win the Big Sky, as they will have nice balance and depth at all positions. If Wheelwright can take the starting job and start to scratch the surface of his potential, it will surprise nobody if the Wildcats win the Big Sky. Scott Bamforth is a stud at the two spot, and will score tons of points. I will have more on Davion Berry soon, but it seems those in the know don't have enough good things to say about his ability. The frontcourt will be deep, as both Frank Otis and James Hajek will see playing time as well. Bolomboy is so talented he should see some time right away.
Not so sure Byron Fulton will be ahead of Frank Otis but we'll find out.

Weber State post Dame

Damian Lillard has moved from Ogden to Portland but that doesn't mean the Bay Area is no longer being repped at Weber State.

In fact, Coach Randy Rahe still has three locals at his disposal:

Frank Otis
6-foot-6, 220

Out of McClymonds High and now a senior, Otis was nagged by injuries last season -- 12 games, seven starts -- while averaging 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Nobody will out-hustle him.

Jordan Richardson
6-foot-1, 185

A West High grad, Richardson put up 4.2 points per game in 2011-12 as a sophomore, alongside a 68-24 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also shot 41% from three-point range.

Davion Berry
6-foot-4, 185

Another junior, Berry transferred in from Cal State Monterey Bay and sat out last season. He's originally from Hayward High.

The Damian Lillard videos (must see)

Damian Lillard came out of Oakland High a few years back and quickly earned Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All Conference honors in his initial season at Weber State.

The next season, it was the Big Sky Conference MVP crown.

In 2010-2011, a foot injury after participating in just nine games cut short his collection of awards.

But in a brilliant move, an idea that originated in the commissioner's office of the Big Sky Conference, Lillard was given a camera and the "Life With Lillard" (our title) videography series began.

Episode Four

By the way, former McClymonds star Frank Otis is finishing up a redshirt season at Weber State and will be back on the court come the 2011-2012 go-around.

Plus, Davion Berry, the former Hayward High star, is now also headed to Ogden, Utah.

The success of Lillard was certainly a lure for Otis and Berry. He was the pioneer, establishing that saying yes to Coach Randy Rahe and Weber State offered a viable path towards allowing one's talent to blossom.

But it's been a two-way street because, since Lillard's arrival, the Wildcats have gone 21-10 and 20-11, before this season's 18-14 during his absence.

Davion Berry to Weber State

Former Hayward High star Davion Berry, who has torn up the California Collegiate Athletic Association the last two seasons with his scoring for Cal State Monterey Bay, has transferred to Weber State of the Big Sky Conference. He'll be joining former Oakland High backcourter Damian Lillard and forward Frank Otis, who played at McClymonds High.
