* Ohlone College 82 - Modesto Junior College 57

Via MJC Men's Basketball: "The Pirates shot 24% from the field, making only 12 field goals in their 82-58 loss to Ohlone, Northern California's 3rd ranked team. The lone bright spot tonight was Edwin Castellanos' 18 points on 6 for 11 shooting from the 3-point line."

The Modesto Junior College Pirates needed more than 24 percent shooting from the floor to beat streaking Ohlone.

The result was an 82-57 loss Friday night at the seventh West Valley Holiday Classic. Modesto (6-7) will meet West Valley today at 2 p.m. for third place.

Ohlone (13-1), ranked fourth in the state and second in Northern California, rang up its 13th consecutive win by allowing only 12 baskets, only three of them 2-point goals.
“Their matchup zone is second to none,” MJC coach Paul Brogan said, “but we couldn’t knock down open looks.”

Guard Edwin Castellanos drilled six 3-point baskets en route to 18 points, but the rest of the Modesto offense struggled. The Renegades led 35-22 at halftime and pulled away from there.

* College of the Redwoods 89 - Shasta College 69

From College of the Redwoods Athletics:
College of the Redwoods sophomore James Slade hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to lead the men’s basketball team past Shasta 89-69 on Friday in the second round of the Kriss Kringle Classic at Santa Rosa Junior College.

CR hit seven 3s as a team in the first half, building a commanding 52-32 lead at the break. “It was the best shooting game we’ve had all year,” said CR head coach Justin Mora. “We shot the ball unbelievably well in the first half, but it was our defense that set the tone right from the beginning. We really got out in the passing lanes and pressured them, and got a lot of transition buckets because of it.”

CR’s Mitchell Hash finished with 16 points for the Corsairs, while Johnny Shelton scored 13 and Brandon Rogers had 11, including three 3s, but it was Slade who shined.

“It was great to see James have the game he did after a little bit of a tough night the day before,” Mora said. “It was nice to see him bounce back and play like he did.”
With the win, the Corsairs improve to 9-5 on the season and will play next against American River on Saturday at 4 p.m.

“They’re a lot like us,” Mora said. “They like to go inside just like we do and we do a lot of the same stuff so it should be a good matchup.”

* Yuba College 90 - College of Marin 64

From the Appeal Democrat:

Chris Smith had 21 points and Barry Ogalue added 20 points off the bench as the Yuba College men's basketball team shook off a rough patch with a blowout victory over College of Marin, 90-64, at the Kris Kringle Tournament in Santa Rosa on Friday.

Starting center Jeremy Bubier had 14 points and nine rebounds, and backup center Jayson Williams added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the 49ers.

"We had 24 points and 19 rebounds between our two centers. You get that from your post guys every night, that's pretty solid," said Yuba coach Doug Cornelius.

Darrell Polee Jr. had a season-high 12 assists, but the big lift Friday for the 49ers came from the bench, which, led by Ogalue and Williams, racked up 46 points.

"The guys who came in stepped up and played really well," Cornelius said. "We're deeper than most teams and can go farther into our bench than most teams can."

The 49ers entered the tournament having lost their last couple of games after a blistering start to the season, but after a solid win on Thursday night over Feather River, the 49ers came out looking to make a statement, Cornelius said.

"The team was down; I was down," Cornelius said. "Finally, we got the monkey off our back. We had fun tonight. That was the Yuba team I thought we'd see."

The 49ers will play for the tournament title at 8 p.m. tonight against Santa Rosa.

"They'll have a huge crowd," Cornelius said. "It'll be like a playoff game, a lot of fun."

Via Diablo Valley College Men's Basketball:
Leading scorers tonight for the Vikings were Justin Yeargin with 13, Jermaine Edmonds Jr. with 10, and A.B. Najee with 9. DVC shot 11-18 at the FT line and made 18 FG's, including 8 threes (Yeargin 4, Ellis 2, Najee and Edmonds with 1 each). The game was close throughout; although DVC was ahead by 9 at one point in the 2nd half, WVC took a 52-50 lead with about 3 minutes to go. Eric Ellis then hit a 3 to give DVC the advantage back, and on the next possession, Pouncey had a big rebound off a Yeargin miss, and nice shot inside to put DVC up 55-52. Pouncey's basket ended up making the difference, as the Vikings won by 1 point.
