Scores and reports from Saturday's San Jose CC tourney

Here are the game results and reports from the final three games at the San Jose City College tournament:

Lassen College (LC) came down from Susanville and took the championship trophy home. First it was 83-53 versus Merced on Thursday, then an 84-83 Friday squeaker versus Monterey Peninsula College and 86-80 against Merritt College last night. At halftime, LC led 45-34.

The Cougars threatened to break the game open at times in the second 20 minutes but this matchup was too good for the Thunderbirds not to close the deficit more than once and also for Lassen to carry the lead.

At the 12:52 mark, the Cougars were ahead 60-55 after a Merritt run. With 9:43 remaining, the lead was doubled to 67-57. The Thunderbirds drew within eight with 3:44 showing.

This was a very spirited game, even in the stands where allegiances were called out.

Game two pitted host San Jose City College and Monterey Peninsula College. The Jags and the Lobos matched up with the hometown guys nabbing a 70-67 win. Monterey's starting point Devin Koeplin did not play due to injury.

With 32.9 showing on the clock and SJCC up 69-67 after Lobo Mitch Wood buried a three-pointer, SJCC's sophomore guard Tyrone Viney was fouled. He made one of two free throws attempts (70-67) but MPC was unable to score before the clock ran out.

Noticed that former Sheldon High guard Armani Hampton is on the Riverside roster.
