Thoughts and observations from watching Saturday's SJCC tournament

Here are some thoughts and observations after witnessing three games at Saturday's San Jose City College-hosted tournament:

* Liked what Foothill's Janvier Alaby brought to the game with his clever finishes on dribble-drives

* Lassen is not a burly team, although Sammy Allen carries girth and strength at the guard spot, but 6-foot-8 sophomore Juandrico Cole and 6-foot-6 freshman George Jackson will challenge shot attempts inside with their quickness and jumping ability

* Watch MPC's Stephen Dorsey velcro-ing passes into him in the paint and also his accuracy and touch at the foul line -- two needed traits so as to not waste possessions and gimme points

* 6-foot-8 Mitch Wood of Monterey Peninsula College may be just a shade over 200 pounds but his next level coach will be able to utilize his outside touch and good hands as he cuts inside for passes -- he was on the receiving end of a number of short but high velocity passes from his dribble-driving teammates and he never fumbled once while also showing the ability to quickly gather himself and go up

* How did Merritt College's Jovantae Carlton not get press during his high school days at El Cerrito?

* San Jose City College's roster is minus any DI prospects but the guys play hard and very fast -- thus demonstrating the veracity of Speed City

* Bringing out the fashionista in me (ain't that a laugh), good to see Eric Duncan matching up his orange Lassen College uniform with a pair of likewise colored shoes
