The Corsairs were ample harriers on Saturday.
In its final game before opening Golden Valley Conference play at home on Wednesday, the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team forced Southwestern Oregon into 27 turnovers, holding the Lakers to just 28 second-half points and snapped its five-game losing streak, winning 70-64 at Coos Bay, OR.
CR’s Johnny Shelton and Bryce Rose combined for 55 points, scoring 23 and 22, respectively.
“Going into our league opener we were treating this like a must-win to stop the bleeding,” said CR head coach Justin Mora. “It was great for us to get this win and get us going in a positive direction.”
Rose went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line and 9 for 14 from the field, adding a team-high six rebounds, while Shelton hit three 3-pointers in the game, spurring the Corsairs on a second-half run after they trailed by five at halftime, 36-31.
“They both played really well,” Mora said of Shelton and Rose. “Bryce was very scrappy inside and just did an excellent job all-around, playing good defense and being strong in the post.”
CR’s Rishod Abraham finished with nine points, adding a 3-pointer.
“Rishod was aggressive attacking the basket and had a great game for us,” Mora said. “It was really our defense that won it though. We protected the basket a lot better and tightened up defensively.”

The Comets pulled a major upset, decisively handling the Merritt College Thunderbirds 95-70. Merritt entered the game ranked 4th in the state of California. The Comets jumped on Merritt from the onset 8-2 and never looked back. G Dawson Johnson led the Comets with 23 pts, 5 ast, 4 reb, and 4 stls. G Tajai Johnson added 20 pts and 11 rebounds. F Justin Johnson had a strong all around game as well with 13 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, and 4 blks.

Rafe King hit eight 3-pointers en route to a 31-point effort as the host Claim Jumpers (9-6) routed the Rams (1-12).
King, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Carson City, helped guide Columbia to a 44-30 halftime lead in his team’s final tuneup before the start of Central Valley Conference play on Tuesday at College of Sequoias.
Marquell Hubbard, a 6-2 freshman guard from Palm Beach, Fla., added 21 points.
Ian Merzwinski added nine points and Alex Kiriluk, previously of Modesto Junior College and Rosendo AmayaWood added eight for Columbia.

* Cabrillo College 59 - Skyline College 54
From Cabrillo Men's Basketball:
In the final pre-season game before conference play begins next week, Cabrillo traveled to San Bruno to take on Skyline College currently ranked no.8 in Northern California and holding a 12-1 record. Cabrillo looking to get over .500 before they begin conference had a tough task but was up to the challenge. Latrell Wilson got things started for Cabrillo opening the game with a 3 from the left wing. A few possessions later he hit another 3 from the opposite wing, was fouled, hit the free-throw and Cabrillo started with a 7-2 advantage. The 1st half was tough, hard fought and each team struggled to score, at the break Cabrillo led 20-19.
The 2nd half saw each team go back and forth taking the lead, only to relinquish it on the next possession. Matt Nolan came off the bench for the Seahawks to go 3-4 from behind the arch and knocked down 2 big free-throws. Cabrillo's big 3 made plays down the stretch, as well as converting from the charity stripe going 16-18 on the night, including 10 straight in the last 2 minutes. Two Allen Wilcher free-throws would give Cabrillo a 59-51 lead with 11 seconds to play. A Skyline 3 as time expired would provide the final score and Cabrillo drove home with an impressive 59-54 win.
Wilcher paced the Seahawks with 17 points, Wilson had 16, Zavon Jackson had 11 and Nolan's 11 would provide just enough scoring to secure a victory.
