More on Dakarai Allen

From Mark Ziegler's San Diego State - San Diego Christian game report:

"The unsung hero

No one has been hurt more by all the guys being hurt than Dakarai Allen. The dearth of healthy bigs has meant the 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior guard started at “power” forward in both exhibitions and two of the three regular-season games, running the high-post offense, guarding a guy several inches taller and 10-20 pounds heavier, constantly playing out of position.

He has because Coach Steve Fisher says he’s the only guy who knows every position, the mark of someone who has been in the program for four years and paid attention even when he was sitting on the bench during games. He also has because Fisher doesn’t have any other options.

He hasn’t complained, though, and quietly posted a remarkable stat line Wednesday for an undersized 4-man: 15 points (7 of 12 shooting), nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and five blocks. The field goals, rebounds, assists and blocks equaled or established career highs.

And you read that right. Five blocks. He is the first player in school history to block at least five shots at 6-5 or under since 1996-97, which is as far as the database goes back. Only three other players that size have done it in Div. I this season.

Moments into the second half, Allen rolled an ankle – the team’s third ankle sprain in the last month – and was helped off by a trainer, leaving the Aztecs with five healthy scholarship players. He admitted “it hurt a lot.”

Two minutes later, he was back in.

“I don’t like sitting out, honestly,” Allen said. “Every time I get hurt, I try to get back in. Every time, no matter how much I’m hurting, I tell Coach: ‘I’m good.’ I just want to play.”
