Plumbers and basketball players

"Gregg Popovich's Plumbing Comments are Brilliant" -- Kyle Koster

The gist: "...I don’t remember playing tonight,” Popovich said. “No Knute Rockne speeches. It’s your job. If you’re a plumber and you don’t do your job, you don’t get any work,” Popovich said. “I don’t think a plumber needs a pep talk. A doctor botches operations, and he’s not a doctor anymore. If you’re a basketball player, you come ready. It’s called maturity. It’s your job...."

I would say a high school player, even one in college, is still formulating oneself (hopefully we keep doing that as we continue to gain education and experience) and motivation from outside may be needed and beneficial. A professional in a quid pro quo situation (being paid for his time and effort) should be beyond needing that but, still, we are all human. The San Antonio organization prides itself on landing the self-motivated and have done a wonderful job in doing so. But even then, an egg is laid once in a while.

Unfortunately, bad plumbers exist and do get work. We don't invite them back but there are enough people in need of such services to still keep them in employment.
