Cabrillo by 20 over Modesto

Host Cabrillo College handled Modesto Junior College 66-46 last night.

The Cabrillo College Seahawks got the new year off to a good start tonight with an impressive 66-46 win over Modesto Junior College in Aptos. The win improves the Seahawks to 9-6 on the year as they enter Coast Conference South play next week. The loss drops MJC to 8-6 as they enter Big 8 Conference play as well.

Cabrillo and MJC came out of flat and both teams struggled to score as the game was tied at 9 with 11:30 to in the first half. Cabrillo went on a 29-2 run to close out the half and take a stunning 38-12 lead in at the half. MJC did not score a point until there was :48 seconds to go in the half.

In the second half MJC came out and made several runs at the Seahawks but could never cut into the lead enough to ever really threaten the lead the Seahawks had built in the first half.

Colin Gruber lead all scorers with 21 points. CJ Grigg added 17 points. Dalton Noble had 14 points and Phoenix Bills had 10 points for the Seahawks.

From the Modesto Bee: "A second-half surge made a big difference for the Modesto Junior College men's basketball team Friday. The Pirates defeated Moorpark 90-75 after Mike Hill came off the bench to score 21 points in the second half. Brenden Evans led with 25 points. The Pirates (8-5) trailed by three points at halftime, but exhibited new life in the second half..."

Feather River tops Modesto

From the Modesto Bee: "The Modesto Junior College men's basketball team won't get a chance to defend its Clark Classic title. Andrew Lotts, last year's state scoring champ, made sure of it.

Lotts scored 45 points to lift Feather River to a 92-76 victory over the Pirates in the second round of Cosumnes River's tournament. Tashawn Mabry had 19 points to pace MJC, while Mike Hill and Brenden Evans had 15 and 14, respectively. The Pirates will play Columbia in the third-place game today at 1 p.m."

Fresno City College had no trouble with Modesto Junior College to the tune of 102-61.

"Marcus Hall made seven 3-pointers en route to scoring 30 points as fifth-seeded Fresno City College opened its Northern California men's basketball playoff run with a 102-61 win over No. 12 Modesto on Friday.

The Rams (29-3), who had a first-round bye, made 17 3-pointers overall and received scoring contributions from 11 players. Alex Perez had 14 , Erwin Hammock 12 and Thomas Sanchez 10.

Fresno City advances to the third round, where on Wednesday it will face the winner of tonight's game between No. 4 Diablo Valley and No. 13 Chabot."

"For the Modesto Junior College men's basketball team, drawing old Central Valley Conference opponent Fresno City in the first round of Northern California playoffs was tough enough.

Losing a starter to foul trouble in the first half made it that much worse.

The No. 5 Rams beat No. 12 Modesto 102-61 Friday night. Key Pirates' performer Austin Keaton got two quick offensive fouls in the first six minutes and finished with just four points.

"There were two bad calls," MJC coach Paul Brogan said. "And then Fresno played great. They hit 3s — they might never shoot that well again."

Fresno burned Modesto for 17 3-pointers. Marcus Hall hit seven and totaled 30 points for the Rams (29-3). The Pirates (18-12) were led by Julius Brazzel's 20 points. Desi Barmore added 17. It was Modesto's first playoff appearance in five years.

"I don't want this to take away from the season we had," Brogan said. "We had a great season and got the program back on track."
