Josh Akognon, the first Sonoma County native to suit up for an NBA team, will be suiting up for a new squad this season because his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, lost a roster gamble.
Akognon, a graduate of Casa Grande High School, stuck with the Mavericks after signing a 10-day contract late in the 2012-13 season. The Mavericks exposed him to the waiver wire in a move to avoid a salary-cap penalty caused by their signing of free agent guard Monta Ellis, but before he could clear waivers he was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Akognon, a shooting guard who turned 27 in February, was Dallas’ leading scorer in the Las Vegas Summer League, which ended last week. He averaged 17.5 points for the Mavericks and shot 41.8 percent from the field, including a team-high 39 percent from 3-point range.
