12/18/13
Former LPC coach Tony Costello will be inducted posthumously into the Chabot College Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime of the Hawks' Jan. 8 game at Chabot.
Costello, who passed away Aug. 25, coached the Hawks for 6-plus years, but before coming to LPC in 2005, he coached at Chabot for 17 years, the last 14 as head coach.
While at Chabot, his teams qualified for the regional playoffs 12 times, won two conference championships (2003 and 2005), went to the State Final 8 in 2002 and the Sweet Sixteen in 1997.
Costello's overall record at Chabot was 250-179. Fifteen of his Chabot players went on to play Division I and another 33 at Division II or NAIA. He was also named Coach of the Year twice. Moreover, his 1997 team won the State Scholar Team Award with an overall team grade point average of 3.3.
The Jan. 8 affair will feature a doubleheader, first with the LPC and Chabot women playing at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Coach Costello Scholarship Fund for LPC athletes through the LPC Foundation.
Donations can also be made directly to the LPC Foundation, making sure a notation of “Coach Costello Scholarship Fund” is on the memo line of the check and mailed to the college at 3000 Campus Hill Drive, Livermore CA 94551.
