Meet Sean MacKay

Sean MacKay is in his initial year as an assistant to Head Coach Percy Carr at San Jose City College (SJCC) but this certainly isn't his first rodeo, if you will, in the basketball ranks.

A St. Francis High graduate who also attended and played at DeAnza College for a year, MacKay has a business and finance degree from USF although he didn't take to the court for the Dons.

But the siren song of hoops never left him and he dove back in by assisting Steve Filios at St. Francis from 1998-2000.

"I realized I loved the game a lot, a passion was there and I liked the process of putting a team together," MacKay explained.

Adter St. Francis, he ran his own AAU squad in the Peninsula from 2000-2004.

Beginning in 2005, MacKay headed across the Bay to San Leandro High School and began coaching the junior varsity team. Then, he became the varsity head coach in 2008. That head coaching tenure concluded in 2013 with the school’s first every appearance in North Coast Section Championship game.

At that point, MacKay desired a new challenge.

So he reached out to the legend heading the Jaguar program for the last 37 years.

"I've known Coach [Percy] Carr for 20 years. I've had childhood friends play for him, and have sent a few of my former players his way as well."

So what are MacKay's SJCC duties?

"Each assistant (Dallas Jensen, Lynn Washington) has specific duties for in-game stats,  all of us have a hand in skill development, and I have been able to work on the techniques in defensive sets."

Ultimately, MacKay's goal is to be a head coach at the junior college level and that's another reason for his affiliation with Carr.

"He has had 10 formers assistants under his tutelage become  junior college head coaches “ MacKay explained. That's a coaching tree with a lot of branches and unsurpassed by anyone in the California junior college coaching ranks.
