In what surely must be an individual high this season in the California community college ranks, San Jose City College's Andre Russell tallied 50 points in a February 1 matchup against Gavilan College.
At 6-foot-4, 205, he shot 21-42 overall, 8-8 from the foul line while also capturing 14 rebounds, 10 offensively.
A second team, all conference selection last season, the San Leandro High graduate (he was a qualifier out of high school) is averaging 22.7 points per game while shooting 50% overall and 77% at the charity stripe this go-around for the 15-8, 6-1 Speed City squad.
Sean MacKay, an Jaguar assistant who coached Russell in high school, described him as "athletic but not flashy, a blue collar guy with a high motor." MacKay also noted that Russell "has developed a strong mid-range game, something he didn't have in high school."
