Bennett at #50?

So ESPN is determining the Top 50 coaches in college basketball (a fun but in no way any metric-driven exercise) and St. Mary's Randy Bennett comes in at a tie for #50.

Really.

This is not an attempt to downgrade anyone (more an example of how impossible a ratings task like this is) but look at what Bennett has done with getting the Gaels to the Big Dance plus that run with Samhan and crew versus say #48 Stew Morrill who hasn't made any sort of positive impression in the Big Dance. There was a 2001 Utah State win over Ohio State but also an overall 1-9 NCAA tournament record, 0-6 in the NIT.

Plus, what has #45 Mike Bray accomplished at Notre Dame with so many available resources, the ability to recruit nationwide and all those alumni?

The best #39 Tubby Smith could accomplish in six seasons at Minnesota was a pair of 9-9 records in conference play.

Until the last two go-arounds at St. Louis, #29 Jim Crews owned four first-round Big Dance appearances but just one victory in 17 seasons at Evansville and no appearances in seven years with Army.

Where's the logic?
