California Maritime Academy's men's basketball player Erik Hanson, a Mechanical Engineering student-athlete from Santa Rosa, California, was named the California Pacific Conference's Emil S. Liston Award Recipient.
Named in honor of the NAIA's first executive secretary and the prime mover behind the men's basketball tournament, this award has been presented annually since 1950 to one men's and women's basketball player who has shown high athletic and scholastic achievement.
"Erik represents the very best of what it means to be a collegiate student-athlete," said Cal Maritime Head Men's Basketball Coach Bryan Rooney. "He is extremely committed to maximizing his potential in every area of his life and this award rewards his hard work in the classroom and on the court.
Hanson, who was also named an NAIA Academic All-American this Spring, averaged 11.1 points per game while shooting an impressive 55% from the field. He earned First Team All-Conference honors as he helped lead the Keelhaulers to their third consecutive conference championship and a third straight trip to the NAIA National Tournament. Erik also excels in the classroom as currently carries a 3.86 grade point average in the classroom.
Matthew Hanson, NAIA Director of Legislative Services, commented,"Erik is an outstanding example of the high ideals and standards held by each member institution within the NAIA. California State University-Maritime can take great pride in being represented by such a fine student."
As a resulting of winning the award at the conference level, Erik has been nominated for the Emil S. Liston award on the national level.
