The coaching fraternity

The world of college coaching is similar to most any other occupation in this aspect: you produce (in this case, win by landing talent) or start packing. But thankfully most of our jobs don't have thousands of people watching nor are they televised. Thus the boundaries of what is acceptable behavior in recruiting are skirted if not downright ignored by certain members of the coaching fraternity as they are by those in other occupations.

This Dayton Morinaga article on Hawaii recruit Isaac Fleming contains some precious examples:

“...Schools were calling me all season, and I had to keep telling them that I already signed with Hawai’i,” the 6-foot-4 guard said...Incredibly, some other schools were still trying to recruit Fleming as recently as last week. “One coach called my dad and said Coach Gib was leaving Hawai’i,” said Fleming, though he did not identify the school. “It’s been crazy, but I talked to Coach Benjy (Taylor) and he’s been telling me what’s going on. I’m confident about going to Hawai’i...”

Negative recruiting isn't new nor is negative recruiting after the fact (post signing). The coaches who don't use this tactic know who is and certainly resent it but that seems to be about the extent of the reaction. But it makes you wonder about the number of cold shoulders exhibited or evil eyes offered at coaching conventions.
