Former Drake High standout Luke Chavez scored a team-high 22 points to lead the College of Marin men's basketball team to the consolation championship at the Kris Kringle Invitational and the team's best preseason start in a number of years. The Mariners (9-2) closed the three-day tournament with a 66-54 victory over Los Medanos on Saturday.

"We were a little fatigued at the start of the tournament, the first game," COM coach Dave Granucci said. "As the tourney wore on, we fought through that fatigue and we got better.

"Our guys were resilient. To finish off the preseason at 9-2 is a great start for this team and this program."

Brandon Kenilvort, Willie Rooks and George Johnson all scored eights points for COM.
