Tourneys matching up local and regional teams

Why don't more regional college tournaments take place a la getting together the DI teams -- Pacific, USF, Sacramento State, UC Davis, San Jose State University, Santa Clara -- in northern California?

Kevin McNamara writes about why the four teams in Rhode Island don't pair up in an event. It begins:

"The idea seems simple enough. Gather the four Division I college basketball teams in Rhode Island, play a season-opening or holiday tournament, and help grow the sport in the state.

Maybe get a sponsor, pass out lots of goodies and even give some money to charity. Call it the Dunkin’ Donuts Dunkoff or the Alex & Ani Classic. Or the Quahog Cup.

But hold off, hoop fans. The coaches and athletic directors at Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College and the University of Rhode Island say they can’t envision a scenario where such an event, or even a one-day doubleheader, could take place. The schools can’t even agree on yearly games against one another, let alone a day when everyone shares the same building.

The reasons are complex and varied, ranging from ego and pride to turf wars and, of course, money..."
