The Alaska Nanooks have announced the signing of College of Marin's Neal Chavez. He prepped at Drake High:
"Head men's basketball coach Mick Durham announced the signing of Neal Chavez on Wednesday afternoon, as the Nanooks add their fourth player in a busy offseason.
Chavez, a 6'4" junior forward from the College of Marin in California, led his previous school to a 26-4 record last season while he averages eight points, three rebounds and three assists so far throughout his career.
"Neal is a wing player that will be able to defend against the bigger wings in our conference (Great Northwest Athletic Conference)," said Durham. "He's a team player who is willing to sacrifice his game for the betterment of the team. Last season his team had a special year (26-4) and Neal was willing to cut down his scoring to help in other areas where his team needed it."
David Granucci, head coach of the College of Marin, echoed Durham's analysis stating, "Neal is without a doubt the hardest working player I've ever coached. His passion and dedication to basketball, his teammates, and coaches is what makes him a special player."
"Along with his winning intangibles, Neal brings a diverse skill set with him to Alaska," continued Granucci. "He can play multiple positions, is a very intelligent player, and is balanced both offensively and defensively. Coach Durham's program and the University of Alaska are getting a great player, and an even better person in Neal Chavez."
