After winning the Big Eight Conference championship with a sparkling 12-2 record and finishing 23-8 overall alongside a trip to the regional semifinals, 11-year Cosumnes River College (CRC) Coach James Giacomazzi is heading home. Successful and with wonderful memories but getting closer to his roots.
A resident of Livermore, he has taken the men's basketball head coach position at Las Positas College (LPC). Still to be completed are a number of notifications, plus meetings with CRC administrators, but no longer will Giacomazzi have to undertake a one-way, 75-mile drive to get to work and then do it again at night.
He grew up in Fremont and his wife in Union City although she later lived in Dublin. Coming from his tenure as an assistant coach at San Jose City College, the couple eventually chose to reside in Livermore after homesteading initially in Elk Grove.
"I'll have more time to spend with the players and with my family. That's important to me because I was in my car a lot."
Family has an expansive meaning for him. Not only will he be around much more for his wife and kids -- "my daughter's school is next door and I live three exits away from LPC" -- but his players too. "Being around the guys as much as possible" will be an easier attainable goal. "I'm looking forward to getting with the players soon and hit the ground sprinting."
So what is he inheriting at LPC considering the CRC facilities are among the best in the state? "We have an outstanding state of the art facility with two weight rooms that our student athletes have access to and much much more." Plus, there is this bonus: "We hosted the state playoffs two years ago at CRC and at LPC we'll be doing that next season."
Giacomazzi has yet to form a new coaching staff -- "it's a little soon but the conversations have gone well and I'm excited for the possibilities."
There is also the move from the Big 8 competition to the Coast Conference North so now it's jostling City College of San Francisco, CaƱada, Chabot, Ohlone, Skyline and Foothill for position.
