It's remarkable that such a move wasn't called for much earlier as is the exposure of too many administrative feet of clay in how this was handled.
If "Greater advising and academic support, as well as retention services for those students, are a priority" at UC Santa Cruz then two elements need to be put in place. One, metrically measuring this as well as pursuing student feedback that such is indeed taking place and two, any hires outside of this realm, especially administratively, must be publicly justified.
