The play of Utah junior guard Delon Wright has fortified the program to the point where Utah has a catalyst and a go-to performer who is always ready when called on. Last week, he scored 22 points with six rebounds, six assists and three blocks in the win over USC. Two nights later, he became a role player and gave himself up for the team magnificently in helping the Utes defeated UCLA, 74-69, for the first time since the 1983 NCAA Tournament.
Wright leads the Pac 12 in field goal percentage at 63.5 percent and is in the top 15 in scoring, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Interestingly as a 6-5 guard, he averaged 7.3 rpg. and has double figures on the glass on three occasions. Wright proved he belongs with the elite on Sunday night as he played the full 40 minutes, scoring 19 points while grabbing six boards and four assists.
“One of the things I think is that many times, the other team’s point guard is not going to the offensive board, so it enables him to rebound a little bit,” said Krystkowiak, “A lot of times our bigs are in block-out mode and he can come down and free rebound. It’s pretty amazing he has had double digit rebounds from the guard positions.”
As Utah leads that Pac 12 in field goal percentage as well at 51 percent, Krystkowiak credits Wright with much of that statistic, but aside from his own shooting prowess.
“Delon takes high percentage shots and is a solid passer,” commented Krystkowiak, “He is instrumental in getting bigs involved and finding the right guys on the perimeter and when we look at a year ago, it’s much improved.”
