The lessening lure

Watered down, diluted, diminished -- take your pick but it's apparent that many of the prep basketball events held in San Francisco or the East Bay no longer feature the same number and quality of prospects as in the past.

Call this being whiny or label it a false recollection of the good ol' days if you will but that's my evaluation. Not that going D1 is the end all/be all (it isn't) but attending an event which features a minimal number of D1 level projected talents is disappointing to many fans, let alone college coaches who pay handsomely for entry.

So what's the cause?

Not pointing fingers but simply pointing out a fact, it's the growth of shoe and apparel affiliations in the Bay Area. Currently, it's the top Nike teams, Under Armour teams and Adidas teams not playing each other either because of business reasons or due to participating in a national tournament elsewhere in the country that weekend.

It's not good for the game, however amorphous that rings. Fans don't get to see the best pair off in the local/regional rivalry. In a way, it's not fair to the players either. Making a living or some extra cash is fine but can we get some cooperation out of respect for the game?

Remember the Soldiers playing the Bay Area Hoosiers back in 2009? Now that was a matchup and a marvelous game to witness. People still talk about it.
