(Part Two) Report on 2017 Southern California Spring Tip Off
The second annual Southern California Spring Tip Off was held Saturday and Sunday April 8-9 at Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove. 110 teams from the western United States participated. Scouts/media in attendance included Joel Francisco-All Stars Sports, Frank Burlison-Burlison On Basketball, Gerry Freitas- Hoop Review scouting service/Hoopreview.net, Aaron Burgin-Full Time Hoops, Ronnie Flores- Cal Hi Sports, Devin Ugland-Hoops By Ugland, Greg Rosenberg-AZProspects.net, Matt Moreno-GoAZCats. Here is a report on the event.
Top Prospects: (*indicates highest consideration)
*6’3” PG Logan Johnson of St. Francis HS 2018 (Tyler Johnson Elite 17U)
High IQ left-handed player who truly understands the intricacies of the point guard position. Advanced feel out of the pick and roll where he reads the defense like a book in order to identify when he can explode to the basket and finish with either hand or set up a teammate by snapping a pass to a shooter or dropping one off to a rolling big. Consistent perimeter shooter who can pull up off the bounce from both mid-range and 3-point range. Ultimate competitor who displayed a passion for the game.
5’6” G Oliver Lazo of James Lick HS 2019 (San Jose Thunderbirds 15U)
Knockdown 3-point shooter from multiple spots behind the arc. Quick release with repeatable mechanics. Quick with the ball in transition.
*6’7” W/SG Jonathan Ned of Heritage HS 2018 (Team Lillard 17U)
-Long and skilled shooter with deep range. Has body control in traffic and can pull-up. Good IQ who can make plays for others. Ball fakes/1-dribble pull-ups and can drive the lane. Needs to add strength. Plays like KD. High major minus/high major potential.
6’8” PF Cameron Reese of Oakland Tech HS 2017 (Team Lillard 17U)
-Athletically gifted. Scores it in the paint. Can fall away on his defender to score. One of the better athletes at the event. Will need to go JUCO/Mid major potential after.
6’3” SG Devan Sapp of Archbishop Mitty HS 2020 (Team Lillard 16U)
Consistent shooting threat from mid and 3-point range. Understands how to utilize a shot fake to lose a defender and get into the paint where he can get into his mid-range jump shot. High motor and active defender who can guard multiple positions.
6’1” PG Treshon Smoots-Jones of Grant HS 2018 (Team Lillard 17u)
-Athletic, solid handles, pushes the break. Good passer who gets people the ball in scoring situations. Can penetrate/drive-has a nice first step. Has a motor.
6’4 CG Jake Wojcik of Bellarmine Prep 2018 (Tyler Johnson Elite)
-Combo guard with solid skills, confident ball handler, precision passer. Shoots it well with deep 3 range. Can be a facilitator or a scorer, knows how to play. Committed to Siena.
