...Here's the rub. A three-year national college study in the mid-1990s by Jeff Benedict and Todd Crossett showed that although male student-athletes make up 3.3 percent of the student population, they represent 19 percent of sexual assault and 35 percent of domestic violence perpetrators. The study also showed that the general population has a conviction rate of 80 percent, but for athletes it was 38 percent...It would also be fascinating to determine student-athletes from which sports are most involved. For whatever reasons, male volleyball, water polo or track team members don't seem to be the ones being charged or convicted.
