* Sierra College 75 - Modesto Junior College 64

A win by the Modesto Junior College Pirates would have vaulted them into a Friday night collision against Cosumnes River for first place in the Big 8 Conference.

The Pirates didn’t earn that chance.

Modesto did not lead during the second half and, hurt by 21 turnovers, lost 75-66 to a Sierra team that had not won a conference game before Tuesday night.

“We let Sierra get to the rim and we couldn’t get stops,” MJC coach Paul Brogan said. “We had a chance to really separate ourselves tonight.”

The Pirates (10-10, 3-2), who had won three in a row, trailed by only five points with three minutes left. Sierra (4-13, 1-4), which averages only 58 points a game, successfully worked for points through all the important possessions.

The Wolverines’ balanced offense was paced by guard Matt Scott with 12 points and forward Khalil Foster with 11.

Modesto, which trailed since the early minutes, stayed close thanks to guards Zack Gonzales with 16 points, Edwin Castellanos with 12 points and Eric Melgar with 10. Castellanos netted four of his team’s eight triples.

Sierra snapped a four-game losing streak.
