It may take a certain age to recall this but Gary McLain has title to the best backcourter performance I ever witnessed. It took place on April 1, 1985 in the national championship matchup between Villanova and heavily favored Georgetown in which the former won 66-62 due to a number of remarkable individual and team efforts. As a team, Villanova:
* shot 22-28 from the floor (nore the % plus the very few attempts)
* shot 22-27 from the free throw line
* committed but 12 fouls
* sent GT to the line for just eight free throw attempts
Plus, there was the remarkable performance of 6-foot-2 Gary McLain.
Georgetown was all about pressure defense and it was McLain's responsibility not to succumb and also to run time off the clock offensively. He controlled the tempo for all 40 minutes and committed just two turnovers.
McLain scored but eight points but he was perfect with 3-3 from the floor and 2-2 at the foul line.
Yes, you could argue this about a number of the performances by the Villanova players that night but McClain's truly was the most indispensable. He bore the physical brunt of aggressive attackers all night and never buckled. His mental toughness that evening was off the charts.
Ever is a pejorative to many so who/what is your nomination for best ever performance for a collegiate guard?
Here's a good account.
Here's a great feature from the book The Perfect Game.
