Looking at Foothill College this season

Foothill College Coach Matt Stanley has readied his guys for the fast-approaching season (the Owls open up Thursday in the San Jose City College tournament) with a mix of returnees and newcomers on hand.

"Our two best players are back in Janvier Alaby and Seth Turner plus J.J. Espanola," Stanley explained.

Alaby, at 6-foot-2, averaged 12.4 points per game last season, shooting 47% overall and 45% from long distance, as well as 2.5 assists.

Also out of the backcourt, the 6-foot-4 Turner was an all-around contributor as the top boarder (7.6), third in scoring with 11.5 points each time out and just under a pair of assists nightly.

The 5-foot-10 Espanola contributed 5.8 points a contest alongside a 41% accuracy rate behind the three-point line.

Then there is also 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman wing Asante Monadjemi getting back on the court as well as Allson Reynold at 6-foot-8 who transferred in from a national junior college in Maryland.

"We're going to play typical Foothill basketball, like controlling the tempo," Stanley explained. "We don't look like much when we walk into the gym so we don't pass the look test. But on paper, we're better than last year."

From the 2013-14 Foothill team, guard Kyle Toth earned a scholarship to Cal Poly of the Big West Conference. Backcourter Kevin Sweat is living the rough life at Hawaii Pacific and forward Dan Gunther is playing at Pacific University in Oregon.

Stanley also provided an amusing anecdote. When he and the other Owl coaches play the guys who are redshirting/grayshirting that season, it's a can't really lose proposition for the elders. "If we win, I tell them it shows how far they still need to go and, if we lose, it's because of how well we're coaching them."
