Word is that USF and Arizona State recently matched up in one of those 'secret scrimmages' and it was the Dons who, playing very well, turned back the Sun Devils.
Long Beach State and Arizona State also paired off with the former emerging on top 91-79. Temidayo Yussef, a freshman out of St. Joseph's Notre Dame, performed well in the paint for the 49ers.
ASU Coach Herb Sendek has an interesting mix of freshmen recruits plus junior college transfers so it's likely his squad will need some time to gel and develop.
Dons Coach Rex Walters lost his top player to graduation but appears to have a solid nucleus of guys who mirror his mindset.
Don Monson at Long Beach State has made 49ers a magnet for transfers as well as local talent so expect The Beach to be challenging for the Big West title this season. It will be crowded at the top but they'll be in the mix.
