Looking at the teams and players in the Santa Cruz ab=nd surrounding areas

Andrew Matheson explores the Santa Cuz Coast Athletic League, the Monterey Bay League - Gabilan, the Monterey Bay League - Pacific and the Mission Trail Athletic League - Coastal as league play begins.

Here are his players to watch:

Kaijae Yee-Stephens, Santa Cruz, Sr.: Guard who averaged 21.5 points per game last season is one of the top players in the CCS; signed a letter of intent in November to compete for Southern Utah next season

Sandor Rene Rodriquez, St. Francis, Jr.: Earned first team all-league honors as a sophomore, when he averaged 5.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game

Cole Rothman, Aptos, Sr.: Guard, an all-league honorable mention last season, has helped Mariners in scoring and assists department, earning all-tournament honor in December at Nor-Cal Invitational

Jackson Turner, SLV, Jr.: Forward currently leading senior-heavy Cougars squad with 13.83 points per game; second on the team in rebounding

Ryan De Los Santos, MVC, Sr.: Guard/forward is the most consistent scorer on a team that is averaging more than 64 points per game

David Ortiz, Watsonville, Sr.: On a team that this season isn’t lacking height, 5-11 guard is leading Wildcatz with about 13 points per game

Travis Lane, Scotts Valley, Jr.: Guard brings size — he’s 6-4 — and scoring — he averaged 14.6 points during Dads Club — to dark horse Falcons team.

Davon Northcutt, SLV, Sr.: Second-team selection a year ago, guard is leading team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, and is fourth in scoring with 11 points per game

Keanon Williams, Santa Cruz, Sr.: Guard looking to improve on offense after averaging 3.1 steals per game last season and earning league’s Defensive Player of the Year honors; named MVP of Dads Club tourney

Lucas Schmidt, MVC, So.: Big presence in the paint, 6-9 center returns to senior-heavy Mustangs lineup after being named Freshman of the Year last season in the MBL-G
