Pittsburgh stands 14-1 and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference as of today making Sterling Smith's choice of a graduate year destination look extremely wise. But, then again, he has certainly been a positive factor in the Panther owning such an impressive record.
After Chico High, Smith spent a year at Redemption Christ Academy in New York and then headed off to Coppin State in Maryland where he he played basketball and graduated in three years with a degree in criminal justice.
With a year of eligibility remaining, he transferred to Pittsburgh and is now a health and physical activities major in the Graduate School of Education.
On the court, he's averaging 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds a game with a 2-1 assist-to-turnover ratio while shooting 42%, 49% and 89% respectively. Smith plays 22.5 minutes per contest as a starter.
