A hopeful analysis on Malik Pope

Malik Pope, tough guy

The 6-10 junior elevated the release point on his jumper from his chest to above his head, but the most noticeably change is something less tangible: his motor. He’s going harder, diving for loose balls, mixing it up in the paint, blocking shots, trying to dunk everything. It makes for less of a finesse game and sometimes a rawer product, but definitely a more inspired one.

Pope spent the spring at pre-draft NBA workouts and the summer playing in the Drew League in Los Angeles with seasoned pros. Asked what he learned, he didn’t hesitate with his response: “Aggressiveness, higher passion, higher energy.”

It’s still early and a grueling season can sap verve, but it’s a good sign.
