Mark Ziegler's latest on Malik Pope:
Pope unshackled
SDSU coach Steve Fisher and his staff continue to relax the reins on five-star recruit Malik Pope, allowing him to participate in live drills this week after the 6-foot-9 freshman who broke the same leg twice in high school was restricted to shooting on the side over the summer.
Pope still has not scrimmaged 5-on-5, but seeing him do more is like unwrapping a Christmas gift for the Aztecs coaches. His potential is clear – a big, long, agile, athletic body who can handle the ball and shoot it from deep.
“We love Malik,” Fisher said. “He is a very unique, talented player. I think sometimes he thinks we’re holding him back a little bit too much, but we’re doing what we feel is in his best interest. He is getting to do a little bit more – he did a little controlled competition – and that’s a good start for him.
“He’s still a long ways from what you’d say is game ready. But I think it feels good for him to get out there and do a little bit. It’s been a long time since he’s competed...”
