One key question that has lingered since USD game-fixing charges were leveled against 10 defendants in mid-April: Who was the player allegedly solicited by Brandon Johnson “to affect the outcome of USD basketball games for monetary bribes?”
That player, the Union-Tribune has learned, is forward Ken Rancifer.
Rancifer, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the case, was offered a monetary bribe during the meeting but declined to participate. He was not indicted, and there are no indications he will be.
Rancifer, currently attending summer school at USD ahead of his junior year, was one of four Toreros players made available to speak with the Union-Tribune last Friday for the first time since the scandal broke April 12 – but with the strict proviso that, per university policy, they did not discuss any particulars of the case. Just imagine the pressure on Ken Rancifer
Former El Cerrito High frontcourter Ken Rancifer never expected this to be part of his college basketball experience. It's impossible for any of us to imagine the pressure he faced and he certainly deserves to be applauded for doing the right thing.
