Short shorts?

Okay, some team started or at least was first with the trend, now norm, of long basketball shorts. Then such became the standard.

Will this ever be displaced, say by returning to the short shorts?

The autonomic response is no, or hell no, but remember the same thing was said when the long shorts first appeared.
