Frank Woodford offers his takes on some of the Nor Cal prospects who took part in the recent West Coast Super Showcase in Bakersfield:
Marvin Timothy – 2014 SF, Franklin High School (CA)
Timothy is your prototypical combo forward. The rising junior has good
size at 6’7” and is a solid athlete. Defensively, Timothy stood out from
the rest of the forwards because of his versatility. He has long arms
and runs the floor like a guard. The forward was able to rebound out of
his area and defend the rim well. Offensively, the junior’s game is
still raw; he showed a decent low post game though. He got position well
and scored on smaller defenders consistently. Timothy has a ton of
potential, but he must continue to refine his game and develop a more
consistent outside shot to keep defenders honest.
LJ Reed 2015 SG, Cosumnes Oaks High School (CA)
When Reed was on, he was arguably one of the top two players at the
West Coast Super Showcase. The biggest knock on the sophomore scoring
guard was his inconsistent shooting over the course of three games,
however. Reed was resilient though, he played solid defense, ran point
for a good deal of several games and used is 6’4” frame to get double
figure rebounds in another game. The shooting guard has a well-rounded
game for his age group, he sees the floor well and uses angles to get
into the paint and score at the rim. Reed has a high upside and should
gain plenty of college attention this summer when he plays with the PHPS
Renegades on the club circuit.
Rae Jackson 2013 CG, El Cerrito High School (CA)
Jackson was the most outstanding player from this weekend’s showcase.
Even though he is slightly undersized for the shooting guard position at
6’2”, he plays much bigger than he actually is. The unsigned senior
guard scored the ball at a high rate and in a variety of ways. He used a
quick first step to beat his defender off the dribble to get into the
paint, but because he gets a high lift on his jump shot he was also able
to shoot over bigger defenders as well. Jackson has good form on his
jump shot and accurate range out to the three point line. Showcase or
not, his shot selection was questionable at times, but Jackson is a
talented player that will help a team at the collegiate level. An early
season verbal commit to San Jose State, Jackson’s recruitment has been
reopened due to coaching changes at the institution. He is now hearing
from several division one programs from across the West Coast.
