The Mavericks 2013 edition

David Moseley came to Stanford in the latter half of the 1990s from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Able to contribute defensively and with his outside shooting, he earned a degree in economics and then began a lengthy journey playing-for-pay overseas

Moseley liked what he experienced on The Farm so after his playing days subsided he turned that old adage on its head by remaining in the area. He currently teaches and coaches at Woodside Priory in Portola Valley and also operates The Mavericks, an AAU program on the Peninsula, consisting of six or so teams -- sixth grade to 11th grade -- including a U17 squad.

His bedrock principles for the Mavericks:
* Provide excellent coaching and proven tools to maximize each player's basketball skills, court savvy/IQ and potential

* Build a club culture that is focused on the team and learning vs. the individual and personal stats

* Provide game experience for all team members

*Make it as easy and convenient as possible for the parents involved

* Deepen player reverence for the game of basketball while having fun
This spring and summer, he has a number of intriguing prospects on his U17 team. With commentary offered by Moseley:

* Andy Iskopehi, 6-foot-6, sophomore, Woodside Priory, from Niger

"He's been here just two years, is very athletic, 7-foot-1 wingspan, great grades (3.5, 3.5), needs to work on defense and fundamentals plus extend his range out to three-point range"

"Very athletic, long with wide wing span, moves very well without the ball, finishes at the rim with both hands, attacks glass on both ends, good stroke on the perimeter. Nice prospect!"  -- Gerry Freitas after the recent Nor Cal Spring Tipoff

* Connor Bonfiglio, 6-foot-4, junior, Woodside Priory (also plays golf, water polo and baseball)

"can really shoot the three"

* Sam Oguneley, 6-foot-3, sophomore, Woodside Priory, from Nigeria

"A swing man that plays inside and out with a ferocious motor"

* Michael Costello, 6-foot-2, sophomore, Carlmont High

"He's a great two guard with unlimited range that can play the back-up point guard spot"

* Ken Opamuratawongse, 6-foot-0, sophomore, Choate (was at Archbishop Mitty)

"A lefty, Ken is Jeremy Lin with a jump shot"
