The Seawolves have a trifecta of redshirts and two signees

With the foremost Sonoma State need being replacing top backcourt shooters and scorers Patrick Scott and Will Olsem, Sonoma State Coach Pat Fuscaldo has signed 6-foot-3 guard Zen Maki out of Monterey Peninsula College and 6-foot-5 small forward Calvin Smith, another junior college transfer from the southern California.

Regarding returnees, 6-foot-7 Justin Herold returns upfront, as does similar-sized Steve Lackey. Sophomore-to-be Michael Avery at 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-1 junior-to-be Emmanuel Bradford certainly have promise but it appears Sonoma State will be needingsolid contributions from its redshirt class.

The Seawolves have a trio who sat out last season and two look ready to contribute in the 2013-14 season:

* Isaiah Brown, G, 6-foot-1 195 (Richmond High)

Brown averaged 27 points per game as a senior and sooner rather than later should be one of the top-scoring Seawolves. He earned Most Valuable Player honors two seasons ago in the  Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League on a team that finished 1-26, so that says something about his potential.

* Andy Luttringer, F,  6-foot-5 , 215, (Maria Carrillo High)

Luttringer will need more skill development and seasoning.

* Nate Molony-Benjamin, F/C, 6-9, 215 (Analy High)

Molony-Benjamin is both athletic and a defensive presence in a league generally lacking such -- the development of his offensive skills set will need more time.

In summary, Maki will help with catch-and-shoot scoring, Smith with leadership and all-around contributions, Brown with scoring and Molony-Benjamin in the paint defensively and on the boards.
