Looking at MPC in 2013-14

After having a youthful-laden squad this past season, Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) Coach Blake Spiering has some solid returnees for the 2013-14 season bolstered by a batch of newcomers from around the area.

6-foot-1 point Brandon (Monterey High) Hansen is back alongside 6-foot-8 Ivo Basor and 6-foot-6 Stephen (Monterey High) Dorsey coming back upfront. In mid-May, the latter won the state decathlon championship while representing MPC, having never participated in the event until attending college.

Hansen provided 7.6 points per game as a frosh on 45% shooting. Basor posted 4.7 points a contest while connecting on 54% of his attempts as well as rejecting a team-leading 32 blocked shots. Dorsey contributed 5.2 points an outing with accuracy on 50% of his shots.

Also returning are 6-foot-2 point Hayden Mislavsky, who finished third on the team in assists and Mark Relei, a 6-foot-9 forward originally out of Sonora High. 6-foot-5 Andrew Hill High alum Richard Meek will also be back.

Also back is 6-foot-3 Donovan Salvant (above), the former three time All League Seaside High guard and conference Most Valuable Player as a senior, who missed last season. He's a three-point marksmen who totaled a high of 28 points in a game during his initial season

The new guys in town:

* Will Burkett, 6-foot-6, St. Francis High (Watsonville)

Burkett was a First Team All Santa Cruz County Athletic League honoree in 2010-11 and noted as the best passer in the conference.

* Devin Koeplin, 5-foot-8, Dublin High

A lefty, Koeplin was described thusly back in 2012: "Smart PG with good quickness. Plays really hard both ends. Good shooter, real competitive" and "Koeplin is undersized as a point guard but makes up for it with his ball handling, passing, defense, and offensive skills. He plays fundamentally sound and directs traffic well. He has been a starter for Dublin since his sophomore year." He owns a 3.9 grade point average.

* Joseph Delk, 6-foot-3, Salinas High

A Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division First Teamer, here's Delk's game: "emerging as the Cowboys' primary scoring threat, Delk responded by averaging just under 16 points a game. The senior was difficult to stop in the open court, demonstrating patience with his decision making. He was also among the team leaders in assists and steals."

* Kyle Hieb, 6-foot-2, Seaside High

Hieb also earned Monterey Bay Gabilan League Division First team honors with this description: "on a roster filled with scoring options, Hieb was the most consistent, averaging nearly 15 points a game while leading the team in 3-point goals. Not only did Hieb improve his range from the perimeter, but he was often called upon to defend the opponents' top scorer." He also excelled in the classroom to the tune of a 3.9 grade point average.

* Tucker Widget, 5-foot-8, Soquel High

Wiget, a first-team selection by coaches in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League this season, was also named to the Santa Cruz Sentinel's All-County team. he averaged 11.2 points per game for the Knights and converted a team-high 62 3-pointers last season. The young man sports a 4.0 grade point average.

* Mitchell Woods, 6-foot-8, Alvarez High

"Woods was about as close to a one-man team as a player could get. He was the only returning starter to stay with the Eagles on a team where four of the projected other starters left to play at other schools this past season. Undeterred, Wood continued to score at his usual clip of nearly 17 points per game even though there was no one else to shoulder much of the load. Wood scored more than twice as many points as his next closest teammate. His average of 17.4 was third highest in the MBL Gabilan Division. He was also selected to the Gabilan Division First-Team, All-League."

Quentin Davis, 5-9, Inderkum High

Davis led his squad to its first Tri-County Conference title this past season. He's extremely fast and can dunk at 5-foot-9.

Caleb Wood, 6-foot-3, Galena High

Out of the Reno area, Wood scored 17 points per game as a prep seniorand was named Second Team All State. His father measures 6-foot-9 so he may very well have some inches left in him. Here's one description from 2012:"Good 3-pt shooter, active without the ball (always moving and cutting), decent finisher around basket."
