So who stood out at the NorCal JUCO Summer Jamboree?
First and foremost, the big man on the high school campus is now the slow, thin one at his community college. There was just so much quickness on display vis-a-vis a high school game and the physicality of the play was so unlike what appears in prep matchups.
Not in any particular order, here are some players:
* CCSF 7-footer Sami Elerky was easily the top prospect on display. His jump hook over his left shoulder was on target and unstoppable and he's very athletic. He's not 'there' as a defensive presence but that should arrive as the length of his arms makes it seem like he could put the palms of his hands on the floor without bending his knees. He also looks like some weight gain wouldn't negate his physical movement. California had him at one point but his current allegiance, if any, is unknown. He's from Denmark although some fans were speculating Coach Labagh assembled him in a secret lab on Phelan Avenue.
* 6-foot-9 Kana Aju, a sophomore also at CCSF, looks more mobile this season and that should help in his production this coming season.
* 5-foot-9 Dulani Robinson mans the point for the Rams and is effective scoring outside and inside but will the latter translate to the next level? There aren't many small scoring points in DI so can he make the impression that less shots (even though he is the best outside shooter for CCSF) and more of a focus on passing is just fine for him?
* 6-foot-7 Jaycob Velasco is a wide load for Cosumnes River College but also has an intriguing pick-and-pop talent that includes three-point range.
* His teammate, 6-foot-9 freshman Daiveon Leverett, is a vision maker. The college coaches in attendance certainly saw his thin frame and rawness but he covers the floor in just a few strides, blocks and alters shots already and causes witnesses to imagine what he will be like come 30 more pounds.
* 6-foot-9 Matt Simpkins, now at Chabot College, showed a nice jump hook a couple of times but needs to delete his outside jumper from his repertoire. It looks funky, wasn't accurate (at least yesterday) and coaches at whatever is his next level will want him in the paint. Some greater strength via added pounds would also be an asset. The promise that has always been there reasserted itself when he went above the rim to nab a rebound.
The last viewing of Simpkins for this spectator was when he played for a Sacramento-based team alongside 6-foot-9 Terrance Jennings versus Shakur Village which featured Wendell McKines and Eli Holman. No, that wasn't the peach basket era.
* Speaking of Chabot, Paris Davis displayed the best court vision of all yesterday as he issued some nifty passes that produced good shots for his teammates.
* San Jose City College has Josue Salaam, a 6-foot-4 freshman out of Hanford West High, who nailed a trey and also completed a physical drive-drive for a layup in a game sequence. The lefty didn't play like a newcomer to the college ranks. Watch him.
* Maurice Joiner is a 6-foot-6 freshman forward out of Chicago and now at San Jose City College. He was verbally directing the Jaguar defense in an impressive manner and chipped in with some points and rebounds. He's on the thin side but some DII schools should be monitoring him.
* Liked the energy that former Dublin High guard Devin Koeplin brought to the Monterey Peninsula College team.
* 5-foot-9 point Elijah White has moved on from El Camino High to Skyline College.
* Olajuwon Garner is absent from the current Fresno City College roster. He averaged 10.7 points per game in 2012-13, shooting 43%, 75% and 43% respectively for the Rams.
Apologies extended to all those we didn't witness or blindingly overlooked.
