Background on Chabot basketball plus the next Gladiator game

From the Chabot men's Basketball Facebook site:
Chabot enters conference with a 5 game winning streak that puts their current record at 14-3. In the most recent State poll Chabot is ranked #7 in Northern California & #12 in the State of California.

The Coast-North Conference will be an exciting race as three of the state's top 12 teams come from the conference.

Chabot hopes it's hot shooting, rebounding & assist/turnover ratio continue as they will face many different styles and defenses in the seven team conference.

Currently as a team Chabot has the best three point shooting percentage in the conference, making 39.7% of their shots beyond the arc. Chabot also has an incredible assist/turnover ratio. Turning the ball over only 6.2 times per game, while averaging 13.6 assists. In fact, Chabot averages more steals, 6.6 per game, than they do turnover at this point. This will play a huge factor, as every possession counts come conference play. Chabot also averages more block shots per game @ 3.8.

Leading the very balanced offensive effort is a duo from Oakland. Paris Davis (Skyline High) is putting up 11.6 points per game, and Leo Smith (Oakland Tech) is 2nd on the team averaging 10.1 per contest. Sophomore Greg Brown is a close 3rd averaging 9.9 points per game. Freshman Ray Baldwin is right behind averaging 9.8 points per game with Cortez Barrett averaging 8.6. Ray Baldwin leads a balanced rebounding effort with 6.8 per game.

Starting off conference action Chabot will face district rival, Las Positas, who comes into conference with an 8-7 record. This game is a 'must win' for Chabot in order to be conference champion contenders.

Las Positas is led on offense by the 3 headed monster of Steve Cazares (College Park HS), Davis Kimble (Hayward High), & Jacob Contreras (Amador Valley HS) who average 14.6, 14.1 & 13.4 respectively. Las Positas is a great passing team who can really get hot beyond the arc.

The men's game will follow the women's game between the two schools in a double header. Women's game is scheduled for 5pm with the men's game tip-off for 7pm. Half-time will include a nomination to the Chabot Athletic Hall of Fame of the late Tony Costello who coached at both schools during his tenure — at Chabot College.
