The William Jessup University men's basketball team placed two players on the 2013-14 All-California Pacific Conference team, which was announced by commissioner Don Ott.
Warriors junior Corey Clement earned first team honors, while freshman Caleb Richey earned second team honors. For the second year in a row, the Warriors took home the Cal Pac Newcomer of the year as Clement won the honor that Keenan Prince won in 2012-13.
After transferring from Peninsula College, Clement made an immediate impact for the Warriors and on the conference. The Las Vegas native averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds, while shooting 61% from the floor and 85% from the free throw line in conference action. On the season, he is shooting 86% from the free throw line, which ranks him 10th in the country. He recorded 12 double-doubles this season. His season high came against California State-East Bay as he logged 30 points and 19 rebounds. Clement set a new school record with 162 made free throws and tied the school record for free throws made in a game (14).
Coach Lance Von Vogt stated: "First team all league is a great honor for Corey to receive, but it is also a very well deserved honor. Corey's toughness, scoring, rebounding, defense and general all around game placed us in a position to compete for a conference championship. The great thing about Corey is that he is even a better teammate and person than he is a basketball player. Corey was tremendous from start to finish this year so it is no surprise to me that he was awarded CAL PAC Newcomer of the Year. His dominating play put him in consideration for CAL PAC Player of the Year as well. It is great news to know that Corey will be back for one more year as we transition into the GSAC next season. We are blessed to have him in our WJU Warrior family."
Richey, a native of Santa Barbara, recorded one of the best freshman seasons in school history. The 5-8 guard averaged 11.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.75 assist and 2.42 steals in conference action. His 4.7 assist rank him #1 in the conference and # 28th in the nation. He ranks #1 in the conference in steals. Against Northwest Christian University and Menlo College, Richey had a season high 20 points. He recorded a season high nine assist against Northwest Christian.
Coach Von Vogt stated: "Caleb Richey really came on strong down the stretch leading us from the point guard position as we won 9 out of 10 games in conference and placed ourselves in position to compete for a conference championship on the last night of the regular season. With Caleb being a Freshman our program is in good hands moving forward because he is only going to continue to improve especially with his work ethic."
The dynamic duel of Clement and Richey will help the Warriors make a run at the California Pacific Conference Tournament Championship this weekend as they look to secure a trip to the 2014 NAIA National Tournament in Branson, MO. The Warriors will play Simpson University in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm in Atherton.
