Cabrillo College tourney
* Cabrillo College 84, San Joaquin Delta College 71
Cabrillo was taller and quicker in jumping out to a large halftime lead but Delta kept battling and eventually closed the deficit to 13 by game's conclusion. The Seahawks looked formidable and with depth so expect another race to the top spot in the league from the Aptos crew. Out of Florida freshmen Malcolm Stevenson, Randy Motilalsingh and Solomon Taylor plus Blake Trent, from Foothill High in Redding -- all guards -- can create and shoot.
* Shasta College 86, Modesto Junior College 76
This one was with teams wanting to to get and go, sprinting down the court with the ball. Shasta led by five at halftime, 40-35, and eventually doubled that lead by the final buzzer. Shasta defended MJC star Zack Gonzales by faceguarding him most of the game as a single defender ignored what was happening elsewhere on the court and stayed focused on Gonzales wherever he went on the court. Pirate freshman guard Mason Washington, he of a very strong build, carried the offensive torch with jumpers and dribble-drives, including a beautiful one that featured two reverse spins. 28 points was his total.
