A Bay Area Hoosiers update

Here's the latest on the Bay Area Hoosiers (BAH). The direct quotes in the second half of this post are from Co-Coach Phil Doherty.

The remaining tournaments featuring Hoosier participation are:

* Adidas Classic in Indianapolis (July 11-15)

* Pangos Cream of the Crop Challenge (July 19-22)

* Fab 48 Tourney in Las Vegas (July 26-29)

The program has added 6-foot-9 Israel Gutierrez, a 2012 frontcourt prospect out of Mexico City. Possessing a 7-foot-1 wingspan and with just four years of organized basketball playing experience, look for the cell phones of Doherty and Rob Jones to soon be constantly ringing. But Gutierrez is looking at national prep schools this summer and will visit some in August. Interested parties include New Hampton, Notre Dame Prep, and Northfield Mount Hermon, all in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) which is the best high school league in the country.

Do any other club team squads besides the Hoosiers do this? This being jerseys tucked in, the bench being cleaned up at game's end and shaking hands with officials at the conclusion.

In the Nor Cal Summer preview, the Hoosiers coaches were more focused on evaluating theirs kids, trying to figure out who were the top eight or nine who could be counted on for later this month. That's why Elliott Pitts and Noah Allen didn't play as much as usual.

It was the first tourney back for Markel Leonard who had been out since April with eye socket fractures. Columbia, Princeton and Brown, as well as many others, are seriously interested him.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"All good athletes buy into structure. We set high expectations and that benefits the players. College coaches value such an environment"

"Our jobs are easy. High school coaches trust us and send us their best players."

"We have seven players with 3.5 or higher grade point averages and three possible Ivy League signees."

"We're trying to play faster this season because we're deeper."

"Stanford is serious about Noah [Allen], liking the toughness, especially in rebounding, that he is displaying."

"[2013 6-foot-9] Aaron Cochran had knee surgery and just started with basketball in June."

"[2013 6-foot-5] Jermaine Edmonds has been practicing with us all along but his participation in Salesian baseball prevented him from playing earlier."

"Watch for [former Hoosier] Sammy Yeager at Fullerton this season." Yeager is a senior who redshirted last season after transferring from Texas Christian.
