San Jose CC tourney
* Merritt College 74, Foothill College 68
Foothill was the first half winner, leading 34-30 after 20 minutes, The Owls enjoyed better ball movement, displaying a pass-first rather than shot- first unselfishness, spacing well and drawing double teams leading to kickouts for open shots. Nobody holds the ball in this offense. Plus despite limited size, Foothill performed well on the offensive boards with a number of putbacks. Come the second 20 minutes, Merritt began pressing and back-to-back layups gave the Thunderbirds a 51-47 lead with 11.46 remaining and the Owls stayed on the 47 mark for four minutes. Omari (Sacred Heart Cathedral) Brown and Tyrell (El Cerrito High) Alcorn mostly showed well in the Merritt backcourt and fellow frosh Andrew (Berkeley High) Pierson provided some second half scoring to power the Thunderbirds. Call this one a tale of two halfs.

* Riverside City College 83, Monterey Peninsula College 77
MPC enjoyed a 44-36 lead at the first buzzer but RCC must have gotten religion in the locker room and went ahead in the first five minutes of the second period. The matchup went back and forth but the Lobos missed a number of free throws. The last four shot attempts in the game for MPC were approximately from 15 feet, 15 feet, 21 feet and 21 feet. Building on his 16 point, eight rebound, six assist effort from the night before, 6-foot-1 sophomore DeOndre (Sacred Heart Cathedral) Otis was again very productive and displayed excellent court smarts and vision. Another tale of two halfs.

* San Jose City College 81, Lassen College 64
The Lassen crew played tough and hung tough in actually reducing a 43-23 Jaguar halftime lead. Having no one to match up with 6-foot-10 Akil Douglas, the lefty tallied 15 first half points before finishing with 24. His initial 20 minutes of scoring came on a foul line jumper, and and1 from five feet out on the baseline, a fastbreak and1 layup, a putback, another putback, an alley-oop dunk and finally a free throw. The outside shooting for Speed City still looks to be a work in progress.
