"THE NCAA TOURNAMENT – PREPARING YOURSELF AS A COACH"
It opens:
"Every game you watch is a chance to learn and continue to define your approach. I spent yesterday watching the NCAA Tournament games like most of America. I love to watch coaches on the sidelines, to see how they interact with their players and handle all the different situations that arise throughout the game. We spend so much time preparing our players to play in a big game like the NCAA Tournament. But how much time do we spend preparing ourselves to handle that moment?
I watched James Jones with Yale, calm and composed the entire game. You could tell how much he trusted his team. I don’t think I ever saw him raise his voice, towards his team or towards an official. He was emotionally in full control, and this was literally the biggest basketball game Yale has ever played. Think about that for a minute. The biggest game in the history of the school, first NCAA bid in over 50 years, a full arena pulling for you as the underdog, and he never once lost his composure. We try and prepare our kids to be ready to play in that type of situation, but how much do we prepare ourselves as a coach to handle that situation?"
