Ayala High got Wooten-ized yesterday as Manteca High's 6-foot-9 senior Kenny Wooten produced a 26 point, 18 rebound, nine blocked shot line in leading his team to a 60-51 success against the Bulldogs to grab the D-III state championship.
The Buffaloes dominated Ayala in the first half, making them look ordinary but a third period comeback that grew into the fourth made the game much closer, 41-38 at one point. Wooten was backgrounded in that quarter by his teammates who needed to memorize the mantra 'good things happen when Wooten touches the ball.'
James Burns/Modesto Bee game reports -- 27 game photos are included.
Thomas Lawrence writes of the team sendoff.
It's great to see a community getting behind one of its high school teams. Manteca is small enough for such a sense of territorial pride to happen.
