Why doesn't USF have a basketball coach? Combining the thoughts of the best and brightest (a club whose membership I have failed to make the cut for several decades and counting now), Steve Lavin either didn't want the job or couldn't get the salary he wanted. But such was apparent a while ago.
Mr. Hoop Dirt wrote this: "Last week, I talked about Columbia head coach Kyle Smith and his name being linked to the Portland job. I have now heard his name being mentioned surrounding the search at San Francisco as well. Obviously both make sense – he was an assistant in the WCC at St. Mary’s, and has had a lot of success at Columbia (his 23-10 Lions face NJIT today in the CIT semifinals). I would assume we’ll hear more after Columbia’s season ends."
Mere coincidental timing, or not? Columbia will play UC Irvine on Tuesday in the CIT championship game.
Let's hope the powers-that-be on The Hilltop aren't waiting for a Dons version of Mr. Godot.
By the way, here's a vote for Smith at whichever job, if any, he desires. He gets what it takes to be a successful coach and possesses those qualities. Housing prices in Portland are a lot more affordable but USF seemingly should be a more attractive location to recruit to.
