St. Joseph Notre Dame 55, St. Bernard 50 /// SJND wins D-V state championship

No man is an island but St. Joseph Notre Dame Coach Don Lippi could probably run for mayor of Alameda and easily be elected considering his squad took down southern California opponent St. Bernard, 55-50 in Sacramento yesterday to win the the D-V state championship.

Junior Jade' Smith and 5-foot-5 freshman Kobe Keiner would be his top aides. Smith provided 21 points plus 11 rebounds. Keiner substituted in for an injured Smith with 11 seconds left and sank two game-clinching free throws, his only scoring on the day. The first foul shot hit the front rim and climbed over and in. The second was nothing but net. Darne Duckett was second in scoring with 14 points.

Looking at their roster, it's certainly possible for SJND to win this again next season. The 2015-16 championship makes it the second in three seasons and the third in six for the Pilots.

How did Smith look? Very long and with seemingly a couple more inches to go considering he has one more prep season to play. He was the sole shot creator on the team. On some attempts, Smith looked ready for college right now but there were also some airballs as well as shots that were forced.
