Jones producing queries

At San Jose City College Men's Basketball: "Lots of calls in this week to Coach Carr from Mountain West, Big West and WAC schools regarding one of the most underrated kids on the west coast!"

That being 6-foot-10 sophomore Akil Douglas who averaged 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds last season for the Jaguars.

So why?

First, it looks like he never played high school ball at Evergreen Valley High in San Jose so he's a relative hoops newbie demonstrating enormous potential in addition to great size and reach. He already is so much more consistent now -- still with a ways to go -- than as a frosh.

As for his game, he torched Porterville last weekend at CCSF for 25+ points on a bevy of catch-and-shoot outside looks, some from beyond the arc. Douglas also added a couple of dribble-drives for scores even though he was knocked away from the basket due to his probable weight of at most 200 pounds. It's unlikely he'll be a back-to-the-basket guy offensively and he's not yet a plus rebounder or defender but those elements, at least to some degree, could certainly come with added strength and weight. Developing some moves utilizing his right hand is also an addition that's needed.

Coaches see him on the court and all sorts of positioning and usage possibilities get generated. As a four, he's certainly going to force his counterpart defender to come far out of the paint or a points price will be paid.

Yes, his body screams for a redshirt season at the D1 level and such should be part of any agreement when he eventually signs. It will be fascinating to see at what level he lands and which program he chooses.
